The Ratiu Forum is a joint initiative by the Ratiu Family Charitable Foundation, the Ratiu Democracy Centre and the London School of Economics IDEAS Think Tank, currently ranked leading university think tank in the world. The Ratiu Forum focuses mainly on Romania and the Balkan region.
The Forum is a non-partisan platform for open discussion about democracy and its challenges in the region. It brings together international academics and practitioners with Romanian citizens to share ideas and knowledge about how to promote and sustain democratic freedoms in Romania and its neighbors through workshops, conferences and stakeholders dialogue. We organize targeted workshops for early career Romanian professionals in key democratic and informative institutions, such as journalists and high school teachers. We also facilitate dialogue between stakeholders through dedicated, profession-specific online events and organize conferences with world-leading academics and policy-makers in partnership with LSE IDEAS.
The Director of the Ratiu Forum is Christopher Coker, Professor of International Relations at LSE. His publications include The Rise of the Civilizational State (2019); Rebooting Clausewitz (2018); Men at War; what fiction tells us about conflict from The Iliad to Catch 22 (2014); Warrior Geeks: how 21st century technology is changing the way we fight and think about war (Oxford University Press 2013) and Barbarous Philosophers: reflections on the nature of war from Heraclitus to Heisenberg (Columbia University Press 2010). He has written for The Times, Times Literary Supplement, The Financial Times, The Spectator, the Independent and The Wall St Journal. He has been a Visiting Fellow at National Institute of Defence Studies (Tokyo); the Rajaratnam School National technological University (Singapore), the Institute for Security Studies (Chulalongkorn University Bangkok) and is a regular lecturer at staff colleges and academies around the world. He is at present Visiting Professor in War Studies at the Swedish National Defence College.
A non-partisan platform
The Ratiu Forum holds targeted workshops for early career Romanian professionals in key democratic and informative institutions, such as journalists and high school teachers. It also facilitates ongoing dialogue between these stakeholders through dedicated, profession-specific online forums. Through its partnership with LSE IDEAS, who share their expertise and engage with local communities at public events – most crucially, its annual public event Ratiu Dialogues on Democracy – Ratiu Forum also brings world-leading academics and policy-makers to the region.
